Surat: Mumbai couple caught with cocaine worth Rs 39 lakh

SURAT: In a first-ever cocaine seizure in the Diamond City, sleuths of the Special Operations Group (SOG) nabbed a couple from Mumbai found to be carrying 39gram of the contraband worth Rs 39 lakh on Sunday.

The operation on International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking brought a major success to the city cops that is running ‘No Drugs in Surat City’ drive zealously.

Police arrested Ibrahim Hussain Odiya, (51), and his wife Tanvir Ibrahim Odiya (47), both residents of Taili Mohalla near J J Hospital in Mumbai. The accused duo were caught from Niyol police checkpost on Surat Kadodara road based on specific information. Police also seized Rs 2.12 lakh in cash from them besides an SUV worth Rs 10 lakh.

The accused were ferrying the drug meant to be delivered to a buyer in Rander area of the city. The police are yet to identify the buyer. During questioning, the accused revealed of getting the cocaine from a Nigerian in Mumbai.

“The accused used to deal in MD but with a plan to earn more money they started dealing in sophisticated drugs like cocaine. They told the police that they get more profit from cocaine than MD, a synthetic drug,” said an SOG officer. The accused had supplied MD to buyers in the city in the past. “Odiya brought his wife along to avoid suspicion that he is a drug peddler. He was confident of entering the city without getting caught,” said the police.

“Cocaine is a high quality drug that has huge demand in the international market. It is not commonly available due to its high price and its users are also limited. It is the most sought drug after synthetic party drugs among the addicts,” the city police added.
