Mum creates 'colourful grunge' living room using IKEA and Argos bargains

A mum has transformed her living room into a “colourful grunge graffiti room” using bargains from IKEA and Argos.

Tasha McBrinn, 30, used spray paints, holographic wallpaper, framed prints and more to create the unique space.

Thanks to bargains found in IKEA and Argos, the transformation cost Tasha £300.

Speaking to LatestDeals.co.uk 's money-saving Facebook group DIY On A Budget UK, Tasha said: "I had the idea for the spray-painted wall in my head for about six months but wanted to wait until after Christmas to do it, and the rest of the room stemmed from there.

"I created the room with a mixture of paint, spray paint and wallpaper and I absolutely love it. The rest of my house is very quirky and exceptionally colourful so the new living room needed to be the same.

“I came up with the idea myself, I knew I wanted to try out a graffiti wall so I just went for it. I used the brightest Montana black spray paints I could find and tester pots I already had from leftover projects for the other walls.

"I also used some willow spray paints when I ran out of the others. I spray painted the first wall with the TV on and worked from there. The other walls were already white, so I did a fresh coat on them before spray painting the window wall but also adding some black lines with a tester pot as I wanted it to be quite abstract.

"I had no plan for that second wall when I was doing it, I just went with it.”

Tasha bought white blinds from Argos for £18 each. She added: “I couldn’t find ones I wanted so I again used tester pots to put my own design on them. I mimicked this design on the third wall behind the sofa to tie it in.

"I used a mixture of spray paint and tester pots for that wall. The final wall I wallpapered with Arthouse paper I got on sale for £8.99 a roll and then added the prints that I already owned to it alongside neon lights.

"I was gifted a lot of the prints as I have a large Instagram following. I was also gifted the holographic wallpaper I have used around the light on the ceiling from an Instagram company.”

The final step was to spray paint the furniture. Tasha said: “I spray painted the wooden furniture in the room to reflect the design and aesthetic of the space I had created. Overall I wanted a colourful grunge graffiti room.

“I spent £150 on IKEA on the new blue sofa, rug, some frames, cushions and accessories. I spent £50 on spray paint, £36 on blinds, £12 on new knobs for the cabinet and £15 for stickers for the cabinet and £5 each for new lampshades for my upcycled lamps.

“Everything else that was new was gifted to me from companies via Instagram or were Christmas gifts. I also used leftover tester pots for the painting I needed and brushes I already had.”

The total living room makeover cost Tasha £300. She said: “I’m made up with it. Throughout my house, I like to contrast black and white with a lot of colours, as it offsets it perfectly.

"I usually use Beetlejuice stripes but for this room, I wanted to go a bit further hence adding the geometric wallpaper into the mix. That wall before adding prints was far too much and made my eyes go funny but adding the colourful prints really broke it up and makes the whole wall pop.

“I also like to use tape throughout my house especially on the floors, so to tie it in a bit I added some colourful tape to the wooden floors. I also painted the radiator behind the sofa electric blue.”

Tasha has some advice for anyone else wanting to take on a quirky transformation. She explained: "I would always tell people to do what they want in their house and not to be afraid of breaking the rules or trying something new.

"I’d also say you should practice on small pieces of furniture if you’re planning on spray painting as it’s not the easiest thing to master. I know tons of people have commented online saying it would give them migraines or it looks like a crack den but none of that bothers me because all that matters is me and my family love it!”
