Mum baffled after being 'harassed' by 'bonkers' parent over free Facebook Marketplace item

A mum has been left scratching her head after receiving a barrage of "bonkers" Facebook messages from a parent demanding a free playpen.

The mum listed a number of items on Facebook Marketplace - a popular forum on the social media platform which enables items to be listed for sale or for free - for "people to take" as she's having a "big clear out".

She listed a playpen in the morning and operated on a first come, first served basis. Half an hour after listing the item, she "got a message from a lady who will come and take it" that evening, which the mum thought was "brilliant".

Just before updating her listing to mark it as "gone", she received a message from someone else which read: "Need this .. please drop off at X address between 3 and 5pm today". The mum replied "saying it was taken and anyway collection only and left it at that".

Then she received two further follow up messages which read: "I can't believe you would give it away without even asking why I need it I bet I need it more than anyone else", and: "You're so selfish I bet you sold it instead".

The mum took to Mumsnet's popular Am I Being Unreasonable forum to detail the exchange with the "bonkers" parent in a post titled, "Offered something on Facebook .. now confronted by harassment". She revealed further messages she received, which read:

"You don't care about anything but clearing out your house you couldn't give a s*** about a young mum like me" and, "If you've got any other children's stuff message me and you can drop it over tomorrow, I need things".

As well as: "You obviously don't care if my child gets hurt because they don't have a play pen.. you've got to give it to me, don't be heartless" and, "How am I supposed to come and get it I've got children you need to drop it off today".

The mum continued: "I ignored her and blocked her and now receiving stroppy messages from another person saying they're her friend, I'm victimising her, I shouldn't just give things away without talking to people about what they need it for, everyone deserves a chance.

"And best of all: "you should be dying of shame for treating a young mum like this I hope you carry the guilt to your dying day" WTAF [what the actual f***]?????

"I've blocked them too and await next messages with interest. I strongly suspect [their] "friend" is also her. I am having quite a boring day cleaning out the loft so this is brightening it up no end".

The mum's post was met with heaps of responses from fellow Mumsnet users, keen to share their thoughts. One said: "The cheek! Glad you can see the funny side".

Another commented: "oh wow, I have a great reply for her but it would probably get me banned from MN [Mumsnet]! I think blocking her is the best way, I would probably end up in a world war 3 argument!"

A third said: "They sound bonkers. Just keep ignoring." A fourth joked: "I can't believe you didn't psychically know she needed it. What kind of person are you? I always consult my crystal ball before I do anything!"

Another commented: "People are bonkers!" And another said: "Hilarious I would have to laugh at the ridiculousness of that too. But unfortunately there are some people who may take it to heart and be really upset, glad you're not one."

Another Mumsnet user commented: "Oh my goodness. How utterly bonkers. Glad you can laugh about it!" And another added: "Free stuff always seems to bring out the nutters. Every item I have put stuff on gumtree for free has attracted cheeky rude people."
