A much-loved son lost his life in tragic circumstances after choking to death on meat whilst playing a video games.
Adam Robert Cockerill passed away on April 29 at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough after collapsing at his home days earlier.
An inquest heard the 31-year old suffered a catastrophic brain injury caused by choking, which ultimately led to his death. He had initially been rushed to intensive care, but never regained consciousness.
Summarising a doctor's report, assistant coroner Karin Welsh told the hearing at Teesside Coroner's Court that Mr Cockerill was in cardiac arrest.
She said: "Adam had been admitted to hospital on the 22nd of April. The circumstances reported to the doctor were that he had been playing video games at home and sadly choked on a piece of meat. This caused him to collapse in cardiac arrest."
Coroner Welsh added that paramedics "managed to regain circulation" before he was transported to the hospital.
There, she added: "It was very quickly realised by the doctors that he had suffered a catastrophic hypoxic brain injury and sadly did not recover consciousness. He was kept comfortable by the hospital passing away on the 29th."
Following a post-mortem doctors gave a cause of death as 'hypoxic brain injury due to choking'.
At the time of Mr Cockerill's death, his family honoured him as a "treasured and dearly loved son".
