Mr Takumi review: We tried the exquisite new Chinese and Japanese fusion takeaway in Leeds

A new fusion takeaway has opened in Leeds, offering up Chinese and Japanese delicacies.

Mr Takumi is situated in King Lane, Alwoodley, and has an extensive menu ranging from Chinese menu staples salt and pepper munch boxes, wings, dumplings and Japanese offerings sashimi, sushi, teriyaki, and more.

So, if either you or your dining partner are in two minds about which oriental cuisine to go for, you’re amply covered. There’s a lot of choice and variety for each cuisine, which is instantly a big plus for the takeaway which opened in January. Their quick serving times are also a bonus as the food was ready to pick up in just ten minutes.

Unfortunately, Mr Takumi isn’t offering a delivery service yet – so it’s worth bearing that in mind before you order. It’s collection only. But it’s in an area of King Lane by a parade of shops, on the corner of The Avenue, which offers ample parking spaces for a quick and convenient pick-up.

When I returned home and opened the paper bag and packaging, the smell was utterly glorious. I went for some Chinese classics with my order.

For starters, I ordered the chicken spring rolls which were very generously portioned. If I recall correctly, there were about six quite large rolls in my order.

The rolls were crisp and gooey on the inside, packing lots of flavour, pairing splendidly with the sweet and sour sauce provided. Plus, there was an ample amount of filling within the rolls.

Mr Takumi has a swathe of salt and pepper offerings. They have chicken wings, breast, shredded, shredded beef, saba fish, prawns, mushroom and tofu. And that’s before you get to their jumbo packed, salt and pepper boxes. Needless to say, Mr Takumi has you covered if you have a salt and pepper itch to scratch.

I went for the salt and pepper saba fish. This was served up in a huge portion with countless pieces of fried fish nuggets lying on top of a bed of vegetables.

The fish had subtle hints of salt and pepper infused with the crunchy batter. The morsels of soft and tender saba fish within had a rich enveloping flavour. The peppers were very spicy, injecting a nice kick into the dish.

There was a truly vast selection of main dishes to choose from – but I felt like having something spicy and sweet, a good old Szechuan plate. I decided to order the ‘God Mother Style Lamb’, a traditional Szechaun dish which included slices of stir-fried sliced lamb with homemade black bean chilli oil.

The presentation of the dish was on-point with the meat mixed in with lots of colourful looking vegetables, chopped into to nice big chunky pieces, in a substantial portion. The pieces of lamb were tender and soft with lots of veg, subtle aromatic spices and a more substantial after taste. I also ordered the egg fried rice to pair with this dish which also had a rich depth of flavour.

The people of Alwoodley should be very pleased with this new takeaway offering. The food was crafted to a high standard. Next time, I’m tempted to try their Japanese menu items…but it’s going to be hard to pry me away from some of exquisite Chinese food I’d already tasted.

The bill

  • Chicken Spring Rolls - £4.50
  • Salt and Pepper Saba Fish - £8
  • God Mother Style Lamb - £9.90
  • Egg Fried Rice - £3
  • Total: £25.40
