The Good Hotel Guide has revealed its annual list of 12 César winners with a number of Northern properties making the cut. The awards are given to hotels, inns and B&Bs deemed outstanding in their respective categories.
The guide, now in its 46th edition, claims to be the only truly independent hotel guide in the UK. Named after famous Swiss hotelier, César Ritz, the guide has dished out ten awards every year since its formation in 1978.
This year's winners include the former Tebay Services Hotel on the M6, a hotel run by aristocracy, and a revamped 1950s youth hostel. The 12 winners also included a Grade I listed townhouse where the in-room coffee maker can be found in a doll’s house and Michelin-starred properties in the heart of the British countryside with bird-watching and red squirrel spotting opportunities on the doorstep.

Westmorland Hotel in Penrith - formerly the Tebay Services Hotel on the M6 scooped best Hotel in the North, while Forest Side in Grasmere, was awarded Best Country Hotel. Also flying the flag for the region, Cambridge House in Reeth was named best B&B in the country, while The Cookie Jar in Alnwick was selected in the Editor’s Choice list in the Romantic category, and Underleigh House in Hope made the Top Hotels with a View list.
Formerly Tebay Services Hotel, Westmorland Hotel in the Lake District on the M6 was awarded best in category for its “quiet rooms with fell views” and its “unfussy but tasty Cumbrian food”. Also commended for its “excellent” value for money, readers described the motorway spot as providing readers with a feeling of ‘peace and well-being’.
Any hotels, B&Bs or inns that have made in on the list are considered outstanding in their particular category, resulting in a “must go” list of places to stay for those planning weekend breaks and holidays in Great Britain and Ireland. The Good Hotel Guide features 650 hotels, inns, B&Bs and guesthouses, with 414 main entries and 44 new entries (these being a combination of new properties and new entries to the Guide).
Forest Side in Grasmere, meanwhile, which was awarded Best Country Hotel, stood out for its Michelin-starred cuisine - 90 percent of the produce is sourced from a ten-mile radius - “elegant” bedrooms and red squirrels in the garden. Northumberland bolthole, The Cookie Jar, which was profiled in the Editor’s Romantic category, was formerly a Convent of Mercy and has been tastefully renovated into 11 luxurious rooms and suites.
And Yorkshire guesthouse, Cambridge House in Reeth, North Yorkshire, which ranked as Britain’s best bed and breakfast, scooped the award thanks to its sweeping views of Swaledale and friendly advice for guests looking for walks in the local area. The guesthouse, run by Robert and Sheila Mitchell, has already picked up a number of awards since it was opened in 2013, including a VisitEngland Gold Award and Yorkshire.com White Rose Award.
