Motherwell's Fir Park was like 'sinking ship', says Steven Hammell as side prepare to host Kilmarnock

Motherwell boss Steven Hammell admits parts of Fir Park were akin to a sinking ship last week after freezing conditions caused severe damage inside the stadium.

But he hopes the Steelmen can kick-start their bid to keep their head above water in the Premiership when they face Kilmarnock tomorrow night.

Motherwell are still waiting to set sail in the Premiership again after their return from the World Cup break at home to St Mirren last week was postponed.

The Fir Park gym was left flooded after pipes within the bowels of the stadium burst, while many of the stands were out of action on safety grounds.

A big clean-up operation has been underway this week, with chief executive Alan Burrows and club safety and facilities manager Robert Park among those posting videos on social media of the water damage.

And Hammell said: "I've seen some of these videos and the safety guy looked like he was on a sinking ship, some of the videos he was coming out with.

"I've never seen anything like it but the amount of work the guys have put in has been incredible, so full credit to them for that.

"We are as prepared as we can be for it.

"It has been quite an eventful week. We have been quite restricted to what parts of the stadium we can and can't use.

"I've not seen anything like it last week with the conditions, but we've made the most of it and put another hard week of work in.

"We've managed to do a lot of in-house stuff. It's very difficult with the weather and the conditions, other teams playing as well.

"We have used the week as best we could."

Hammell hopes the interruption hasn't rocked the boat too much and his players will be galvanised by recent events, as they play catch up on their rivals.

He added: "Last week was frustrating. Some teams have played a couple of games now and we've yet to get back at it, so we are looking forward to it and another difficult game.

"The togetherness and atmosphere in and about the group is good. Things like that test you a bit and you've just got to maximise what you've got.

"The last few weeks have been good in terms of getting the squad together and building a positive environment and culture about the place."
