Motherwell and Police Scotland investigating 'absolutely disgraceful' scenes after group allegedly storm Fir Park during SWPL 1 derby

Motherwell have looked into an 'unpredictable' crowd incident at their SWPL 1 match against Hamilton Accies on Saturday with Police Scotland.

The Women of Steel were hosting their first SWPL 1 match at Fir Park and their maiden game at the club's home stadium in over three years.

They lost 1-0 to Accies thanks to a Chloe Muir goal but post-match scenes marred the occasion for some of the nearly 700 spectators in attendance.

Eye witnesses claim a masked group launched attacks as the crowd - several of which were women and children - began to leave the stadium.

'Well chief executive Alan Burrows confirmed an investigation after an eye witness claimed 'men with balaclavas' had confronted them, but Police Scotland have found 'no criminality.'

In an array of social media posts, he said: “It was an almost 700 strong crowd made up with lots of women, children and families.

"It’s hard to believe what happened, but we’ll now work with the police to try and identify culprits. I can’t say too much as this is now a police matter.

"Suffice to say, we had more than adequate stewarding for the crowd and the game itself passed off in a fantastic spirit both on and off the park.

"What happened afterwards, which we have caught on CCTV, was absolutely disgraceful, but clearly extremely difficult for us to predict.

"We are working with all the appropriate authorities, with the evidence we have, to try and identify the culprits and bring them to justice.”

An initial tweet Burrows responded to read: “I was caught up in the middle of it. This couldn’t be predicted and the stewards reacted quickly when they saw what was going on.

"It’s the most disgusting scenes I’ve seen in decades at a match. Around 20 men with balaclavas hiding their faces came at us.

"It was my first women’s match in over 50 years following the club and this happens."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers were called to reports of a disturbance in the Fir Park Street area of Motherwell around 5pm on Saturday, 16 April, 2022.

"Officers attended and there were no reports of any injuries. Following enquiries no criminality was established."
