Mum’s are so important aren’t they, they are your best mate and worst headache all wrapped in one. Jokes aside, they truly do deserve to be spoiled rotten more than ever on Mother’s Day.
And Mother’s Day is a big deal for Scousers. The day involves getting dolled up and hitting the town for some or by perhaps things getting very messy after a lovely meal and sipping too much fizz.
In 2019, Catherine Murphy confirmed she suffered with ‘quite the hangover’ after a Mother’s Day meal at 1pm that turned into her and her mum ending up in one of the city’s karaoke bars. She said it was that day, she realised how many Scousers go 'out-out' for Mother's Day and has set a precedent with her mum that every Mother’s Day they will go ‘out out’.

I decided to venture outside of Liverpool, to understand how places in St Helen’s celebrate Mother’s Day and whether they go all out like Scouse mums do. I spoke to the business owner of a coffee shop and the owners of a few pubs in Eccleston, St Helens to understand how people celebrate Mother’s Day.
Clare Hockenhull, owner of coffee shop ‘bocboc’ since 2010 explained that Mother’s Day is always a sell out for them. Bocboc is hosting a ticketed afternoon tea for Mother’s Day, starting at 2:30pm.
Clare said: “Mother’s day is a total sell out for us, we’re doing an event in the afternoon for a Mother’s Day tea and prosecco but it sold out in 24 hours.
“I find that on Mother’s Day people enjoy a drink. People are ‘out out’ aren't they and they want to stay out for a drink. If people want to carry on drinking after the afternoon tea, we will stay open until whenever people are here.”
Bocboc will still be open today for breakfast meaning walk-ins are available as Clare wants to “make it fair” for people who are not attending the afternoon tea so it gives “both sides as a lot of people don’t want to book places.”
Steve Garvey owns The Griffin Inn. He and his wife Catherine, have owned the pub for four years this April. The Griffin Inn is hosting a Mother’s Day menu that consists of a two or three-course meal and also includes a gift for all mums.
Steve described Mother’s Day as the “main day leading up to spring before Easter so it certainly kicks us off for the spring season I’d say”. Mother’s Day at The Griffin Inn spans out over a wide variety of ages, from the little ones to grandparents.
Steve said: “We have a bit of a mix really, get families with elderly or young ones. Perhaps like your age group (25), you may come with your mum and dad and then decide to stay later so we have a really good mix.” I can confirm, me and my mum have done this many times.
Finally, after speaking with Manager Anne Paterson From The Eccleston Arms Bar & Grill, I quickly learnt how big a day Mother’s Day was to the pub. She described Mother’s Day as “The busiest day of the year”.
The Eccleston Arms are hosting a Mother’s Day three course meal. Anne said: “Everybody comes in for a meal with families, a few stay for drinks afterwards. If it's a nice day, people will sit outside after their meal.”
We then discussed if covid has had an impact on people celebrating Mother’s Day. Anne stated: “Absolutely, we’ve been fully booked now for about three weeks and normally we would still be taking bookings the week leading up to Mother’s Day, we’ve got about 300 people booked in.”
