‘Incoherent and incomplete’: Sen. Chris Murphy Takes a Dig at Classified Trump War Plans

Sen. Chris Murphy from Connecticut emerged from a briefing about the war in Iran with more questions than answers. The senator took to X to express his confusion about Trump’s war plans.

“I obviously can’t disclose classified info, but you deserve to know how incoherent and incomplete these war plans are,” he says. The initial post would be followed by a series of tweets.

“Maybe the lead is that the war goals DO NOT involve destroying Iran’s nuclear weapons program,” he claims. Murphy’s words contradict the Trump administration’s earlier stated goals. On multiple occasions, Trump and his cabinet said that it’s their aim to disable Iran’s nuclear program.

Murphy follows up with, “But then, of course, we already know air strikes can’t wipe out their nuclear material.” This claim corresponds to Iran’s decentralized defense system. Materials used to make nuclear weapons are difficult to track.

“Second, they confirmed ‘regime change’ is also NOT on the list,” says Murphy in his third tweet. It’s a glaring allegation if true. Trump celebrated the Ayatollah’s death on Truth Social and told Iranians that they should “take their country back.” Trump ally Sen. Lindsey Graham also implied regime change as a goal when he went on Fox News and hoped for the downfall of the current Iranian regime.

With the appointment of Khamenei’s son, it’s evident that the old guard is still alive and well.

The start of a long war

“But the question that stumped them: what happens when you stop bombing and they restart production?” Murphy wrote. The senator believes that the real mission, at the moment, for the Trump administration is to “destroy lots of missiles and boats and drone factories.”

Murphy ends his thread with the issue of the Strait of Hormuz. He said, “Right now, they don’t know how to get it safely back open.” According to the senator, the Trump administration has no plans.

Continuous warfare and destruction may continue, all for what? Americans have not been given a coherent reasoning. American service members have already been killed in Operation Epic Fury. A school and several heritage sites have been bombed. Despite all of this, even Trump does not know when the war will end.

Murphy points to a possible reason for the war

Murphy jumped into an MS Now interview with host Nicolle Wallace.

“The most sacred responsibility a commander in chief has is the decision on when to send our men and women into war, because it obviously exposes our young soldiers to the unthinkable, to dying in combat,” Murphy remarks. He recognizes that the Founding Fathers did not place sole authority on the president to declare war. Instead, Congress should be able to weigh in on the matter and debate whether or not it is justified.

“We have still not yet heard a full explanation as to why this is necessary.” Murphy believes that the war is unpopular. As a result, Trump would not be getting the war he wants if there were a Congressional vote in place.

When Wallace asked Murphy about why the United States is at war with Iran, the senator pointed to Israel.

“I mean, the simplest explanation might be the one they gave 24 hours in—that they’ve kind of tried to backtrack since then, which is that Israel made us do it, that Bibi [Netanyahu] decided on this timeline,” Murphy speculated. Secretary of State Marco Rubio implied that Israel was the reason for America’s preemptive strike.

“I hope that isn’t the full explanation,” Murphy stated regarding the matter. Americans who don’t want to be sent to Iran would hope so, too.
