The latest statistics from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) indicate that some 68,460 Personal Independence Payment (PIP) assessments were conducted remotely by video call or over the phone last month. The figure for May accounts for nearly 73 per cent of all assessments conducted.
The data also indicates that 7,290 assessments (7.7%) were conducted in-person and 18,600 (19.7%) were paper-based - this means awards were based solely on a claimant’s responses to the PIP 2 health questionnaire and any supporting evidence or additional information supplied.
It’s important to note that new claims for PIP have been replaced in Scotland by Adult Disability Payment since August last year and that Social Security Scotland delivers the devolved benefit. Assessment rules are different under the Scottish welfare system as consultations are only necessary if further information is required - these are conducted by Social Security Scotland staff and not independent health professionals - find out more here.
