The Moroccan government on Monday kicked off a new five-year program to train primary and secondary school teachers.
Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch chaired in Rabat the signing ceremony of the framework agreement, worth 4 billion dirhams ($4 million), the government said in a statement.
The agreement was signed by the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports and the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
Under the agreement, the government allocated a budget exceeding 4 billion dirhams to finance the program to design a new training scheme in five years.
The program reflects the high interest of King Mohammed VI on issues related to education, training and scientific research as fundamental levers for upgrading society and pushing forward development, said the government
The program aims to meet the current and future needs of primary and secondary school teachers of different specialties.
It also makes it mandatory for teacher to hold a bachelors degree in education to join the profession.
The parliament had passed a law that offers the broad lines for reforming the education sector and the recruitment and training of teachers.
The reforms aim to create a new department to train teachers in colleges. Students with a baccalaureate degree can join the five-year program.
