More IPP prisoners are referred to Court of Appeal – what we know

  • The Criminal Cases Review Commission has referred nine more indefinite jail sentences to the Court of Appeal , bringing the total to 25 cases referred this year.
  • Highlighted cases include Carl Lamb, who remains in prison 20 years after receiving a 20-month tariff, and Shaun Lloyd, who served nearly 14 years for stealing a phone.
  • The miscarriages of justice watchdog is reviewing over 250 cases following recent court rulings where judges failed to properly consider defendants' age or maturity.
  • Although IPP sentences were abolished in 2012, 856 affected prisoners have never been released from prison and 1,415 remain in custody following recall.
  • Andy Burnham has pledged to introduce legislation before the end of this parliament to address and end the long-running injustice of IPP sentences.
