'More interested in knighthoods': Glasgow man tears into Labour on BBC Debate Night

AN audience member on BBC Scotland’s Debate Night has been praised by the SNP for hitting “the nail on the head” after he said that Labour had become a second Tory party.

The man in the Glasgow audience for the BBC broadcast on Wednesday evening said that Keir Starmer’s party was “more interested” in knighthoods and "fancy glasses" than anything else.

It comes after Starmer was embroiled in a row after accepting tens of thousands of pounds worth of clothes and glasses from Labour peer Waheed Alli.

After initially defending the gifts, Starmer later said that he, Chancellor Rachel Reeves, and Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner would no longer accept such freebies.

Speaking on Debate Night, one audience member referenced the row.

He said: “The Labour Party, they’re something else. They're more interested in knighthoods and damehoods now.

“They can't even mention the word socialism anymore, and they've got the cheek to blame everybody else.”

He went on: “The only reason the nationalists came into being was because they looked at the Labour Party and Scottish public and realised they were just voting for another Tory party.

“So what the British people have got a choice out of the two main parties, it’s two Tory parties, and it will be proved.

“And now their leader’s more interested in fancy glasses and free suits. That's the kind of Labour Party we're left with now.”

Scottish Labour MP Johanna Baxter could be seen shaking her head in disagreement as the audience member spoke.

However, the SNP shared a clip of the man speaking on social media and praised him for getting it right.

“This audience member hit the nail on the head on @bbcdebatenight last night,” the SNP said.

“Both Labour and the Tories are committed to the same cuts agenda – and both receive massive donations from wealthy donors.

“The real change that Scotland needs can only come with independence.”
