Montana Reports Unhealthy Air as Pacific Northwest Wildfire Smoke Pushes Particle Pollution Farther East

Particulate levels in Columbia Falls and Dillon reached the Unhealthy category, and readings in Billings, Butte, Cut Bank, Frenchtown, Great Falls, Hamilton and Libby sat in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range, according to a Montana Department of Environmental Quality smoke forecast that accompanied an air quality alert covering 18 counties.

The alert spans Beaverhead, Broadwater, Deer Lodge, Flathead, Gallatin, Granite, Jefferson, Lake, Lewis and Clark, Lincoln, Madison, Mineral, Missoula, Park, Powell, Ravalli, Sanders and Silver Bow counties. An Air Resource Advisor has been assigned to the smoke event across central and western Montana.

The pollutant driving all of it is fine particulate matter, and it behaves in ways that make the standard air quality advice for a smoggy day partly wrong.


The Transport Pattern Moving Smoke East

Much of the smoke over Montana did not originate there. Westerly transport winds have been carrying smoke from large, active wildfires across Oregon and Washington into western Montana, according to Missoula Public Health.

Local sources add to it. Fires in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness in Idaho, including the Cascade, Wolf Creek and Three Links fires west of Hamilton, have caused localized impacts in the Bitterroot Valley and lower Missoula County. Montana's own most active fires have burned in the Pioneer and Sapphire mountains. The Bobcat Lakes Fire has exceeded 5,500 acres, the Sand Creek Fire has burned close to 9,000 acres after growing quickly, and the Moose Fire between Georgetown Lake and the Bitterroot Valley has repeatedly shown active behavior.

Conditions shift quickly. Missoula County air quality was Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups on Aug. 8, while communities downwind of the Pioneer and Sapphire fires, including Butte, Dillon, Bozeman, Livingston and Billings, were experiencing air quality described as Unhealthy for Everyone. DEQ has said that ending the smoke event would require a major weather pattern shift including widespread soaking rainfall, which forecasters considered unlikely in the near term.


The Physical Difference Between Smoke Particles and Ozone

Fine particulate matter, or PM2.5, consists of solid and liquid particles 2.5 micrometers or smaller. Ozone is a gas. That difference determines where each pollutant lands in the body and when each is worst.

Particles this small bypass the nose and throat defenses that trap larger dust. They travel to the deepest part of the lung, where gas exchange occurs, and from there they can cross into the bloodstream. Ozone, by contrast, irritates the airway lining and does not enter circulation the same way.

Kerri Mueller, an air quality specialist with Missoula Public Health, described the longer-term consequences in an interview with NBC Montana. "In the long term it can reduce your lung capacity, it can impact your cognitive function and can cause longer-term complications for those that have asthma and COPD, heart or lung disease, and it can put you at risk for cardiovascular complications and stroke," she said.

The timing is also reversed relative to ozone. Smoke particles behave according to atmospheric mixing. DEQ has noted that inversions trap smoke in valleys overnight and into the morning, especially over western Montana, and that these inversions break up by mid-morning, allowing better mixing and improving air quality. In mountain valleys, the early morning is often the worst air of the day.

That inversion matters for anyone applying the standard advice to exercise in the morning. On a smoke day in a Montana valley, morning may be the wrong choice.


Symptoms and the Groups Most Affected

State and local health officials advise that when air quality is Unhealthy, people with respiratory or heart disease, older adults, and children should avoid prolonged exertion, and everyone else should limit it. At the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups level, those same groups should limit prolonged exertion.

At those levels, most people will notice something. Coughing, irritated eyes, sore throats, headaches and difficulty breathing are all expected short-term effects of smoke exposure rather than signs of unusual susceptibility.

The groups facing the greatest risk are people with asthma, COPD and other chronic lung disease; people with heart disease, for whom particle exposure raises the risk of acute cardiac events; older adults; young children; pregnant people; and outdoor workers who cannot avoid exposure.

People with asthma should follow their asthma action plan and keep quick-relief medication accessible. People with heart or lung disease who develop symptoms during a smoke event should contact their health provider. Chest pain, severe shortness of breath, confusion, or a rapid heartbeat warrant urgent evaluation rather than waiting.


Reducing Indoor Exposure Through the Season

Smoke particles enter homes through windows, doors, outdoor air intakes and structural gaps. Missoula Public Health recommends a portable air cleaner with a HEPA filter to reduce indoor concentrations, and notes that a rebate is available through NorthWestern Energy. Mueller said a HEPA cleaner is a good tool specifically for wildfire smoke because it filters particles down to 0.3 microns.

A HEPA unit sized for a bedroom, run continuously with the door closed, creates one reliably cleaner room, which is often more achievable than filtering an entire house. Upgrading a central system filter to a higher-efficiency rating helps if the system can accommodate it. Setting car ventilation to recirculate reduces exposure during driving.

Fitted N95 respirators help during unavoidable outdoor time. Cloth masks and surgical masks do not filter fine particles effectively.

Residents can check current conditions through the EPA and Forest Service fire and smoke map rather than relying on how the air looks, since visibility correlates imperfectly with particle concentration. Alerts are reissued daily, and boundaries shift.
