Monkeypox can spread like COVID through close contact: How this could put Indians at risk during upcoming festive season and how to stay safe?

As the festive season nears, the concern around viral infection increases. With several pathogens on loose, and monkeypox being declared as a global emergency, it is of utmost importance to practice hygiene especially if you have immunocompromised, elderly people and kids staying with you.

India is preparing to tackle monkeypox infection. 22 cases have been identified in the country since 2022 with the latest one being reported in March 2024. High level meeting has been held by the Union Health Ministry in view of the global health emergency announced by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the spread of the new strain of monkeypox, the clade 1b. The first case of monkeypox in India was identified in July 2022.
