Monkey abandoned on London bus as tough new rules come into force

  • A marmoset, named "Oyster", was discovered abandoned in a laundry bag on a London bus.
  • The RSPCA rescued Oyster, who has since been seen by a specialist vet and moved to a primate sanctuary.
  • The RSPCA warns that this abandonment could be the first of many following new Animal Welfare Regulations in England.
  • Since April, new legislation requires all primate pet owners in England to obtain a license.
  • Concerns have been raised by the RSPCA and Born Free about the welfare of an estimated 5,000 pet primates, due to low uptake of the new licensing system.
