KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan Super Giant returned to winning ways by thrashing Calcutta Football Club (CFC) 4-1 in a Calcutta Football League Premier Division match in Barrackpore on Friday.
The Bastab Roy-coached side began in earnest after being held by Kalighat MS in their last match, going into the attack right from the word go. Their hero of the day, Suhail Bhat, got two goals in the first half and Engson Singh added two more in the second half while CFC’s Akash Mondol scored a brilliant goal to reduce the margin.
Bagan rose to second position in Group A on the back of this victory while CFC, who have taken in 24 goals so far, continued their dismal run.
Suhail could have got a hat-trick on the day but his first goal in the fifth minute of play was ruled off-side. However, the striker from Kashmir opened the floodgates by scoring in the 31st minute. But Bagan could not hold on to the lead for long as Akash scored with a long range shot to equalise for CFC in the 40th minute.
Suhail again came to the green-and-maroon brigade’s rescue when he tapped in from close range at the stroke of half-time after Nongdamba Naorem’s attempt was punched out by CFC goalkeeper Soumya Banerjee.
Engson’s introduction in the second half added teeth to the Bagan attack as they created a number of chances. However, their conversion rate should leave coach Roy worried. Engson ensured the team’s victory by scoring in the 68th and 79th minutes. Both the goals came from long range shots taken from outside the box.
In another match of the day, Pathachakra held Dalhousie AC 1-1 in Konnagar.
