Mohamed Salah risks breaking Liverpool hearts with next transfer as massive club loom: report

Mohamed Salah of Liverpool waves to the fans at full time during the Premier League match between Leeds United and Liverpool at Elland Road.

Mo Salah's time at Liverpool is coming to an end, and his next club could be one of the biggest in the world.

After nine years at Anfield, Mo Salah has announced he will be leaving Liverpool and starting a new project as he approaches the end of his playing career.

The 33-year-old has played a smaller role under Arne Slot this season, but it seems one European giant believes he's still got something to offer at the top level.

Mo Salah set for Real Madrid move?

According to a report from Egyptian outlet Mwatan News, Salah is keen to remain in Europe and keep competing at a high level, which leaves the door open for Real Madrid.

The report states that the Spanish outfit are 'leading the way' to secure Salah's signature, but there are issues standing in the way.

Salah, who is ranked at no.5 in FourFourTwo's list of the greatest Premier League players of all time, is obviously a talented player.

However, Real Madrid's transfer policy doesn't normally allow for a lucrative deal being offered to a player in the twilight of their career.

The LaLiga giants also have an abundance of attacking talent in their roster right now. Kylian Mbappe, who is the second-most expensive player of all time, for one, may be reluctant to see another superstar jostling for the spotlight at the Bernabéu.

The report adds that clubs such as Roma, Juventus and Inter Milan are also keen on Salah, but a move to Italy is not regarded as being realistic. Salah was also linked with Fenerbahce recently.

If Salah can't secure a move to Madrid, there are other options that offer something very different, though.

Salah will have to balance prestige against financial gain when deciding his next move, and it's said that Al-Ittihad of Saudi Arabia are willing to give him a "leading role" as well as significant compensation.

From a commercial perspective, Inter Miami in the MLS are mentioned, too. Salah would gain incredible exposure on a global scale there, but it remains to be seen whether the player wants to make that trade-off.

To some Liverpool fans, Salah joining Real Madrid could potentially sting. Almost every time the Reds have stood on the precipice of European success in the modern era, the Spaniards have been the team to push them back. That's without taking into account Real Madrid's capture of Trent Alexander-Arnold last summer, whose transfer left supporters on Merseyside feeling somewhat betrayed.
