The latest mock draft from CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson features a flurry of trade activity above the Lions selection at No. 6. It includes the Texans trading up from No. 2 to No. 1 and the Raiders moving up to No. 3 overall.
At the sixth spot, Texas Tech defensive end Tyree Wilson gets the call in this projection. The 6-foot-6 defensive end with the long arms and powerful shoulders is only the 16th-ranked prospect on the CBS big board, but he’s a pretty easy sell to Detroit,
Wilson is a high-motor player who consistently finds his way into the backfield. He’s still raw but the physical tools are there and when he puts it all together he is going to be a problem.
A player who is often projected to go at No. 6 in many other current mock drafts falls to the Lions’ own pick at No. 18. Illinois CB Devon Witherspoon is the fourth cornerback off the board in this mock but remains a perfect fit for what Detroit wants at outside cornerback.
Interestingly, both Wilson and Witherspoon have withdrawn from competing in next week’s Senior Bowl. With little to prove to teams, it makes sense to avoid any potential injury risk in an exhibition game.
