- The incident occurred during a MLS NEXT Pro match on 23 August, where Higuain allegedly squeezed the official's hand, refused to release it after being asked three times, and said "don't forget that this is a man's game".
- Higuain was initially issued a two-match ban, but the Professional Soccer Referees Association strongly criticised the response, stating that the disciplinary action fell “drastically short”.
- Following an internal review, Columbus Crew general manager Issa Tall confirmed Higuain's sacking, explaining that the 41-year-old had failed to meet the club's expected standards of leadership.
- The refereeing association emphasised that female officials deserve equal respect, dignity, and a safe working environment without enduring intimidation or sexist comments.
