SEATTLE - If Giants fans needed something to be positive about after not such a great start to the season, Luis Matos showed them what he can be capable of in the series against the Colorado Rockies.
The young center fielder contributed big time as the Giants got their first three-game winning streak of the season and swept the Rockies. He finished the weekend going 6-for-14 with four of those hits being extra-base hits along with 11 RBIs.
On May 17, his career-high five RBI ignited the Giants comeback and less than 24 hours later, he managed to play even better and contributed with a double, a three-run home run and six RBI to take his total to 11 over the weekend.
According to MLB's Sarah Langs, since RBI became an official stats in baseball in 1920, Matos is the youngest player ever with consecutive games with 5+ RBI, doing so at the age of 22 years and 111 days.
Despite the lack of opportunities that Matos has received this season, he has taken advantage of every single one. He ranks fourth among Giants players in RBIs with just 30 at-bats in eight games played this season.
Matos is batting .333 with a .966 OPS this season, and even more incredible, he has only stroke out once in his eight plate appearances in 2024.
"For me, the most important thing is confidence," Matos said. "This year, I've been fortunate to have that confidence ever since Spring Training, both on defense and offense." And as the Venezuelan said, his defense was also on point against the Rockies.
He robbed Alan Trejo of extra bases with a great defensive play in center field during the fifth inning. It was his second theft of the week as he also took a home run away from Dodgers' Teoscar Hernández on May 15.
