Miss Kansas Alexis Smith made headlines for her bravery and dedication to ending unhealthy and abusive relationships. During the final interview at the Miss Kansas competition, Smith revealed that her abuser was in the audience, emphasizing the importance of her platform.
Despite the emotional moment, Smith remained composed in her sparkly azure dress and expressed her determination to represent as the next Miss Kansas. She received applause and cheers as she affirmed that she and her community deserve healthy relationships.
In a post on Instagram following her win, Smith shared that she chose to speak out against her abuser's attempt to disrupt her peace. She emphasized her commitment to creating a better world and using her story to end unhealthy relationships.
Smith's personal experience with domestic violence has fueled her passion for advocacy. She revealed that every woman in her family has been impacted by domestic violence, and her own abusive relationship began at a young age and continued until recently.
As an ICU nurse, Smith also showcased her talents by winning preliminary competitions in health and fitness and talent, where she performed a ventriloquism act with two puppets. She was awarded over $15,000 in scholarships as the state winner.
Looking ahead, Smith plans to use her platform to continue speaking out against domestic violence in Kansas and beyond. She, along with other state winners, will compete for the Miss America crown in January.
