A two-state investigation became a national one. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a food safety alert confirming 55 people sick across 15 states, and the Minneapolis grower at the center of the investigation issued a voluntary recall it had not issued days earlier.
Two things changed at once for households. The case count roughly doubled from the 40 illnesses two state health departments had described, and the affected product moved from a do not eat warning into a formal recall covering five-ounce containers distributed since May 27. Both changes happened on the same day.
