Miller and Carter steakhouse sinks into lake at Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex

A restaurant has been compared to the Titanic after sinking into the water at Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex. Miller and Carter announced that they will be closed ‘until further notice’ after it started sinking down earlier today (December 23).

The popular steakhouse occupies a converted paddle steamer, but it is currently tilting to one side. Initially staff at another local branch confirmed that Miller and Carter were trying to ‘rectify the situation’. The restaurant later issued a statement on their Facebook page stating the closure and apologised for any inconvenience.

According to the restaurant the closure is due to “structural issues”. Photos and video of the restaurant show it partially submerged in the water.

The company added: "If you have a booking with them today please give us a call on 01268 544714 or book your table at Langdon Hills instead. We will answer as many calls as we can to accommodate you.

"Please do not try and call Miller and Carter Lakeside at this time as they are working hard to try and rectify this situation. Thank you and sorry for any inconvenience."

One onlooker said the restaurant was "going down like the Titanic."

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service added: "We were informed of the incident, but as no one was onboard (after the evacuation) there was no life risks and therefore we were not required to attend.

"The incident has been left in the care of the site owners."
