Mikel Arteta on Arsenal's discipline problem and how it stacks up against Wenger era

Mikel Arteta has told Arsenal to cut out the red card madness - but they have some way to go to match Arsene Wenger's teams for ill discipline.

Thomas Partey apologised for the crazy rush of blood which got him sent off shortly after coming on in Thursday's Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool.

But it was Arsenal's third red card - compared to just one goal - since the turn of the year, and Arteta insists they must cut it out ahead of Sunday's visit of Burnley.

Arteta said: "We played last three games with ten men. When you do that it's difficult to win matches.

"The next game is a massive game after the disappointment of defeat tonight we need to get back on track with a win."

But while Arsenal are the current red card kings - they can't hold a candle to Wenger's men in the sending-off stakes.

The Frenchman's teams built a reputation for sexy football. But they also had a notorious mean streak.

And while it's now 14 red cards in 760 days in charge of Arsenal for Arteta, Wenger had amassed 19 by that point.

By the time the club's most successful manager left the Emirates in 2018, he had had an eye-watering 118 players sent off in all competitions.

Of course, Wenger had combustible skipper Patrick Vieira to rely on for getting into a referee's bad books.

A world class talent with a world class temper, no-one at Arsenal has ever received as many red cards as Vieira's eight - which remains unbeaten in Premier League history.

By contrast, Granit Xhaka has four.

And who can forget Wenger himself getting sent off at Old Trafford for kicking a water bottle in frustration in 2009?

Sent to the stands by referee Mike Dean, he climbed up behind the dug-outs because they couldn't find him a seat and stood there with his arms spread wide.

Partey's latest misdemeanour, after only arriving back in London from an unsuccessful Africa Cup of Nations campaign with Ghana on Thursday afternoon, has left his side in the lurch.

With Xhaka also suspended for the Burnley game, Albert Sambi Lokonga is the club's only available central midfielder this weekend.

Partey wrote on Instagram : "Am responsible for anything that happened and will take all the critiques.

"I should get more intelligent not to get in a challenge already booked but this is my personality, I like to fight for every ball.

"I love this club and love my country even though things don't happen how I wanted, I would continue to work harder and make things right.

"I came back with the mentality to make myself available for the team to get to the final but it did not happen as planned.

"I will continue to give my all when am on the field of play because this is my life and this is what I chose to do.

"Am not happy with all that happened yesterday at the AFCON but I understand only with hard work things will continue to work hard to change this. Thanks."
