Mikel Arteta makes decision on new Arsenal captain as surprise candidate emerges

Mikel Arteta has already made his decision on the Arsenal captaincy for this season but there remains one serious contender to take the armband next campaign.

"Laca is the captain at the moment yes," the Spaniard confirmed on Wednesday in his press conference ahead of the clash with Wolves having previously only committed to naming a leadership group including Rob Holding and Granit Xhaka.

Alexandre Lacazette is the obvious candidate to succeed his good friend Aubameyang as the oldest member of the squad - despite being just 30-years-of-age himself! - and also a popular presence in the Arsenal dressing room.

However, Arteta will know that this announcement is nothing more than a stop gap.

Lacazette is expected to leave in the summer when his contract expires, while Holding is far from first choice and Xhaka is the subject of renewed interest from Roma, football.london understands.

Skippers of successful sides generally come through the heart of a team, and perhaps that is where Arteta should look for his next long-term captain.

"I'd probably say Ramsdale," Darren Bent told talkSPORT when asked who should become new Arsenal captain.

"If Tierney could guarantee that he’s going to play every single week, then yeah, but other than him it’s got to be Ramsdale as he’s the only player who’s going to play every single week.

"When I think about Arsenal captain, I think Ramsdale has that presence that others don't."

As previously reported by football.london, last season a new leadership group was to be selected based on a mixture of the longest-serving and most experienced players at the club to help Arsenal's bid to return to the Champions League.

Among those tipped to be included was Holding and he's gone on to captain the side from the start on numerous occasions this season - most recently against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup.

With that said, the fact the 26-year-old is by no means a regular under Arteta, it could very well be Xhaka who takes over the armband the next time Lacazette is replaced.
