Midland Railway volunteers 'heartbroken' as vandals damage memorial benches, vehicles and signal box

A heritage railway centre is "heartbroken" after vandals struck at the site - damaging memorial benches, vehicles and the signal box. Volunteers at the Midland Railway Butterley in Ripley say they are "devastated".

The vandalism took place on the evening of January 23, causing not only damage to the Midland Railway but also its partner organisations. Local dog walkers heard the noise of breaking glass and alerted the police.

However, substantial damage was already done to various areas on site. It included damage to a heritage signal box, memorial benches, railway vehicles, the station and the works van.

The railway had suffered bouts of vandalism in the past and has since increased security, including CCTV, which captured clear footage the vandals. It has been passed on to Derbyshire Constabulary to assist with their investigation.

A spokesperson at the volunteer-led railway said: "Our dedicated volunteers give up their time to restore and maintain the railway to ensure it is there for future generations, so it is heartbreaking that a few individuals feel that it is acceptable to do this. Although we know times are hard for everyone at the moment, we are running a Facebook fundraising campaign towards a further increase of on-site security and go towards some of the repairs and replacement of the works van. Any donations are greatly appreciated."

Vehicles were also damaged (Midland Railway Butterley)

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Constabulary added: "The force was called to reports of damage to the Midland Railway in Ripley on the evening of January 23. Significant damage was found to have been caused to the museum building, a portacabin and a van. Further damage was also found to a greenhouse within the railway grounds and several windows had been smashed. The damage is believed to have taken place between 6pm and 6.30pm

"Officers are continuing to investigate the incident and are keen to speak with anyone with information that may be able to help with their enquiries. Anyone who can help is asked to contact the force, quoting reference number 23*46290."
