Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder provides Sir Alex Ferguson and Pep Guardiola verdicts

Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder has provided his verdict on two of Manchester's most successful managers, Sir Alex Ferguson and Pep Guardiola.

Before joining the Teesside club, Wilder spent five years at Bramall Lane where he came up against an array of managers while the Blades were in the top flight.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the Boro boss named who he believes to be a 'tactical genius'.

"I would say everybody has to be competent and above competent to manage at the highest level," he explained.

"But I think you take it to another level and you talk about the likes of Pep Guardiola.

"Brendan Rodgers for me was an incredibly good tactician, the way he played different formations, played different ways.

"On the balance when you’ve got the best players in the world, there has to be a structure out there but sometimes big moments from world-class players decide games.

"You’re only as good as your players, but I think the balance from the Manchester City manager and the Leicester City manager is right up there for me.”

Wilder went on to praise Sir Alex's connection he had with his players during his time at Old Trafford and named him as one of the managers he would have loved to work for.

His fondness for the United legend also managed to extend to him inviting the Scot on a night out round Sheffield.

Wilder added: "I’ve got to say my favourite of all time was Sir Alex Ferguson.

"I think he’s just different class, I’ll pay for it don’t worry about that, I’ll find the cash," he joked.

The 54-year-old will get the chance to pit his wits against the current United gaffer, Ralf Rangnick on Friday, February 4 when Middlesbrough travel to Old Trafford in the FA Cup.

Whoever manages to win that evening will be through to the fifth round of the competition.
