Micro review: 'The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece' by Tom Hanks

Legendary actor and filmmaker Tom Hanks' debut novel, ‘The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece: A novel’, was published recently. In the novel, the Academy Award-winning actor talks about the making of a blockbuster superhero film and the comic books that inspired it.

The story imagines the making of 'Knightshade: The Lathe of Firefall', a unique blend of Marvel-inspired superhero elements, wartime drama, and artistic melodrama.

Set in 1947, part one is about a World War- II soldier and his five-year-old nephew. Part two is set 23 years later in 1970 when the nephew reconnects with his uncle and remembers the comic book he saw when he was five, and draws a new version with his uncle.

Cut to the present day, a commercially successful director discovers the 1970 comic book and decides to turn it into a contemporary superhero movie.

Hanks has introduced a multitude of characters-- from tough actors to eccentric writers in this saga. The novel-cum-comic offers an insider's take on the momentous effort that goes into the making of a star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action film. Fans of the actor can give his debut novel a try.

How critics view the book-

Author Ann Patchett says, "'The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece' is its own universe, complete with a sun, a cast of circling planets, and a limitless number of stars. Its gravity pulls you in and its far-reaching, multi-layered, rollicking exuberance holds you in place. I would have been happy to live inside this book forever."

Kirkus Reviews calls it, "A loose-limbed, bighearted Hollywood yarn.”

Author Matt Haig says, "This is a wild, ambitious and exceptionally enjoyable novel. A story about how stories happen, with a swirling kaleidoscope of characters across the best part of a century, and a real beating emotional heart. It has a lot of astute and fascinating things to say about comic books, movies, show business, America, and human beings. I loved every page."
