Michigan State hockey weekend round-up: Spartans split with Notre Dame

The Spartans traveled to South Bend for their first Big Ten Conference, and road series, of the season. Notre Dame came into the series as the No. 12 ranked team in the nation, while the Spartans received votes, but are not yet ranked in the polls.

In game one, Notre Dame showed why they are pushing a spot in the top ten, asserting their dominance early and often while cruising to a 5-0 shutout victory over the Spartans.

Michigan State wasn’t ready to leave South Bend without competing and they came out in game two ready to play. Jagger Joshua’s first period goal gave the Spartans the momentum they needed.

Notre Dame would counter in the second period, tying the game at 1-1, the score that the game would end regulation with behind Dylan St. Cyr’s 39 save performance.

After a scoreless overtime period, the two teams would face off in a shootout.

The Spartans would win the shootout, earning the extra point behind goals from Tanner Kelly and Karsen Dorwart.

RECAP:

Game One: Notre Dame 5, Michigan State 0.

Game Two: Michigan State 1, Notre Dame 1 (SO 2-1 MSU).
