Each year, the Michelin Guide hands out its famous stars to restaurants around the world. Awarded in ones, twos and threes, they’re the best-known indicators of quality in the culinary sphere; the more stars, the thinking goes, the better the food (and, more often than not, the higher the accompanying price tag).
But that’s not the only way Michelin gives praise for a decent plate of grub. Its Bib Gourmand award focuses more on value for money — or, in the Guide’s own words, a restaurant that “will leave you with a sense of satisfaction, at having eaten so well at such a reasonable price”.
Much like the stars, the exact criteria for Bib Gourmand-worthy restaurants are shrouded in secrecy, although Michelin has admitted it follows “no set formula for a Bib restaurant”. Even so, you can be pretty much assured of a quality meal at any of the chosen restaurants, making it a handy compass for hungry diners.
In 2023, four new restaurants have been added to London’s Bib Gourmand selection, from an achingly cool Japanese in Nine Elms to a scorching-hot Thai in Centrepoint. It brings the overall number of inclusions in the capital to 39. Happy eating.
