Michael Vaughan set for BBC return after being cleared of making racist remark

Michael Vaughan is poised to make his BBC return this summer.

The former England captain is set to form part of the Beeb's coverage of the upcoming home Ashes series and England's one-off warm-up Test against Ireland at Lord's that begins on June 1.

Vaughan's return to the BBC airwaves comes after a Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) hearing in March cleared him of allegations of making a racist comment towards a group of Asian team-mates during his time as a player at Yorkshire.

Vaughan was alleged to have referred to a group of four players - Adil Rashid, Azeem Rafiq, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and Ajmal Shahzad - as “you lot” during a team huddle ahead of a T20 match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in 2009.

However, Vaughan categorically denied ever saying it and an independent CDC panel said it was “not satisfied on the balance of probabilities” that the comment had been made.

He had previously been a regular staple of the BBC’s cricket coverage, though stepped back from his role for the second time last summer after being charged by the ECB.

Vaughan initially stepped back from BBC commentary duties for the 2021-22 Ashes series in Australia after being named in Yorkshire’s report that followed former spin bowler Rafiq’s allegations of racist treatment at the club.

He later returned in March 2022 before stepping back again three months later following the ECB charge.

The BBC have confirmed that Vaughan will feature on flagship radio programme ‘Test Match Special (TMS)’ across the coming summer as well as on their ‘Today at the Test’ TV highlights show for the Ireland match.
