Swansea have slammed the racial abuse that was aimed at Ireland striker Michael Obafemi, following his weekend move to Burnley.
Obafemi, who yesterday revealed that he ‘prayed’ for the switch, was targeted on social media.
On Sunday the Dublin-born star completed a loan move to Turf Moor, with a view to a permanent transfer at the end of the season.
Some Swans fans reacted to the move in a way that left the Welsh club “sickened” and determined to identify the perpetrators.
“Swansea City is aware of disgusting racist abuse posted on social media in relation to Michael Obafemi's loan move to Burnley,” read a statement issued by the club.
“The club is sickened by the vile language used in the offending posts, and is working to identify those responsible and take the strongest possible action.
“The matter has been reported to South Wales Police, who are investigating. There is no place for racism or discrimination of any kind in society or football.”
Obafemi joined Swansea from Southampton and scored 15 goals in 52 appearances for Swansea.
His exit seemed inevitable, however, after Burnley attempted to sign him last summer.
