Michael Beale identifies Rangers 'red flags' against Leverkusen but Malik Tillman receives glowing report card

Michael Beale says he's keen to build on the positives and cast out the negatives after his Rangers side cruised past Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in friendly action.

It was the former assistant's first game as Ibrox manager but the real action begins next Thursday when the Light Blues welcome Hibs to Govan on Premiership business. This was a worthwhile warm-up though as Malik Tillman's double in the first half set them up for victory before Scott Arfield finished things off in the second period.

Beale told Rangers TV that while pleased with the game but confesses there are still issues in need of sorting despite Tillman's double being his highlight of the game: "I am pleased with the game and I am pleased with the defensive shape. We used everybody we had which was important. There was some really good parts in the game and some parts we need to tighten up on.

"I think we need to be realistic in where Bayer Leverkusen are as well, that's not them going full tilt. But there was enough there for me to be pleased. We need to make sure the set-play they had in the first half, we don't go 1-0 down in that moment.

"When you are playing for three points, that can make a big difference. In general, I am pleased and I am pleased it's out the way as well as I want to get started on Thursday.

"Everybody staked a claim. All of a sudden, everyone looks like good players. I thought we played well and in patches our last pass or shot could have been better.

"I thought Malik Tillman's first goal though was fantastic and his header outstanding. He is a player I am delighted to be working with and I am so excited for him and the future.

"There's been a lot of change around these players in the last few weeks and there was enough to give me confidence, but at the same time, there were a couple red flags to iron out. We want to press and be more aggressive and that takes a different kind of fitness than perhaps what we have right now."
