Michael Appleton back in Hibs next manager mix as hunt for new boss steps up

Former Hibs managerial candidate Michael Appleton is back in contention to become the club's next head coach.

Owner Ron Gordon, son Ian and chief executive Ben Kensell have conducted an extensive search for their next boss.

A delegation headed to London last week and the Daily Mail report Appleton is among the names in the frame to succeed Shaun Maloney.

He is a free agent after leaving Lincoln City last week.

They also state Sir Alex Ferguson 's son Darren interviewed but is unlikely to pursue the job despite meeting Hibs brass.

Record Sport revealed Paul Clement had been interviewed for the role with former PSV and Derby boss Philip Cocu another who understood to be under consideration.

Roy Keane reportedly has concerns over the Easter Road side's transfer approach as the Sky Sports pundit now appears out the running for the vacancy.

But Appleton is no stranger to potentially taking the reins at Hibs - he was the leading candidate to replace Neil Lennon in 2019 before Paul Heckingbottom landed the gig.

The Leith side now plan to whittle down a candidate list as they aim to get the next appointment right.

Scottish Cup hero David Gray is set to remain in temporary charge until the end of the campaign before a new boss takes over.

Maloney left after four months and that followed the dismissal of Jack Ross before the club's Betfred Cup Final appearance in December.
