More than 100 UK-based academics contributed to Chinese-funded research that MI5 says could strengthen Beijing's espionage capabilities, prompting an extraordinary warning to British universities.

Britain's domestic security service issued a public Espionage Alert on Wednesday targeting the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI), also known as the China Academy of General Technology.
