Hurricane Polo bore down on Mexico's Baja California peninsula on Monday, threatening storm surges, high winds, and heavy rainfall, while Hurricane Nolo triggered heavy rain across parts of Hawaii even as it moved away from the islands.
By Sunday evening, Polo had strengthened into a Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph (205 kph), the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami reported. The storm was expected to lash the peninsula overnight, bringing the danger of flooding and mudslides.
