Mexico's AG Executes Arrest Warrant for Former Guerrero Governor Accused of Covering Up Ayotzinapa Case

People walk past a wall that reads "The police kill students" during a protest over the 11th anniversary of the disappearance of 43 students from the southern town of Ayotzinapa in Mexico City on September 26, 2025. In September 2014, 43 students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Normal School disappeared after being forcibly abducted in Iguala, Guerrero, Mexico, in what has been called one of Mexico's most infamous human rights cases. Last week, Mexico's Attorney General's Office executed an arrest warrant against Ángel Helodio Aguirre Rivero, the former governor of Guerrero, for his alleged responsibility in the disappearance of 43 students from the Raúl Isidro Burgos Rural Teachers' College of Ayotzinapa, Guerrero.

According to Attorney General Ernestina Godoy Ramos, the loss of video from two surveillance cameras at the Iguala Palace of Justice, which recorded the detention of one of the buses carrying the students on the night of Sept. 26, 2014, was not a technical failure but a "malicious and deliberately structured" operation carried out at the highest levels of the state government.
