On Wednesday afternoon, a tragic incident unfolded near a luxury resort in Cancun, Mexico, where a Mexican man in his 30s was fatally shot in broad daylight. According to local reports, the shooting, believed to be targeted, was carried out by two suspects who fled the scene on jet skis.
The unfortunate event took place around noon behind the Riu Caribe hotel, as witnesses recounted that two individuals approached the victim on foot before opening fire. The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds before the suspects made their escape by jet skis. Despite efforts by a marina boat to pursue the suspects, they managed to evade capture.
Authorities have refrained from disclosing the victim's identity or providing details about the perpetrators at this time. The hotel where the incident occurred clarified that the victim was neither a guest nor an employee of the establishment.
This incident follows a previous shooting in July, where a 12-year-old boy lost his life in Cancun due to a violent altercation between rival drug dealers. The assailants, also using jet skis, targeted a rival dealer on the beach, inadvertently causing harm to the innocent child.
Tragically, territorial disputes among drug traffickers have resulted in the deaths of several tourists in the resort areas along Mexico's Caribbean coast in recent years. In a separate incident in 2022, two Canadian nationals were killed in Playa del Carmen, south of Cancun, reportedly due to disputes involving international drug and weapons trafficking groups.
Similarly, in 2021, in Tulum, further south of Cancun, two tourists, including a California travel blogger of Indian descent and a German national, lost their lives when they were caught in the crossfire of a gunfight between rival drug factions.
