New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is one of the most popular players in MLB—not only for his propensity for hitting home runs, but also for his character. And on Saturday, he announced a commitment that should make every baseball fan happy when he hits a moon shot this year.
“So, the Alonso Foundation, this year, we’re going to be donating $1,000 per home run to animal rescues,” Alonso told reporters Saturday. “We’re going to be trying to tackle the issue of getting animals out of kill shelters.”
Alonso went on to explain that the donations will fund rescue efforts to get animals, especially dogs, out of kill shelters.
“Hopefully, there’s a lot of home runs to come this year,” he continued.

In his five MLB seasons, Alonso has hit 192 home runs, won the Home Run Derby twice and led the majors in homers in 2019. With all that in mind, it’s fair to say fans of all stripes will be excited to see the slugger succeed in 2024.
