Mets Owner Cohen Optimistic About Team's Future

New York Mets' Pete Alonso is congratulated by teammates after hitting a ground-rule double during the fifth inning of a spring training baseball game Monday, Feb. 26, 2024, in West Palm Beach, Fla. (

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen has indicated that the team does not plan to sign a long-term contract with star first baseman Pete Alonso before the end of the season. Alonso, who currently holds a $20.5 million one-year contract, will have the option to become a free agent after the World Series. Cohen mentioned that there have been no discussions regarding a contract extension with Alonso, emphasizing that it might be best for the player to focus on performing well without distractions.

Alonso, a three-time All-Star and the 2019 NL Rookie of the Year, has an impressive track record in his five major league seasons, boasting a .251 batting average along with 192 home runs, 498 RBIs, and an .870 OPS. Last fall, Alonso enlisted the services of renowned agent Scott Boras, who typically advises his clients to explore free agency to maximize their value.
