A £20m health centre is set to open in the Metrocentre after property bosses at the region’s biggest shopping centre sealed the unusual letting.
Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust and the Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have secured the eight-figure sum to develop a Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at the Gateshead centre, which is more traditionally visited for shopping and leisure. Around 145,000 appointments will take place at the site each year, and 134 jobs will be created when it opens.
The centre’s plans are still being developed but it is understood there will be an access door on the first floor, giving people entry to the new facility through the Metrocentre mall. The centre itself will be on the ground floor and within the old House of Fraser store, behind Harrods Beauty.
