Temperatures plunged as low as -4C overnight. Clouds were likely to move in bringing with it some patchy drizzle in some areas across the South West.
However, the region is expected to have milder weather in the coming days. From Monday to Wednesday next week it will mostly be dry with sunny spells before the rain hits, the Met Office reports.
The Met Office said: "The cold spell will come to an end later this week and through the weekend across western areas, where it will turn milder and windier with some rain at times." According to its long-range weather forecast, temperatures between Monday, January 23 and Wednesday, February 1 are "likely to be close to or slightly above average overall, especially further northwest."

Between February 2 and February 16, the last of the cold weather is expected to be 'short-lived', with the Met Office adding: "Temperatures likely to be around or slightly above average, with any colder spells being short-lived."

Cold and frosty at first for some, especially in eastern areas. Often cloudy with occasional brighter spells, these most likely in the east. Patchy rain in some western areas. Maximum temperature 8 °C.
Outlook for Monday 23 to Wednesday 25:
Mostly dry with brighter periods on Monday, then cloudier with rain and drizzle in places on Tuesday and Wednesday. Rather chilly with overnight frosts at first, slowly turning milder later.
