An update from the Met Office has shown how much snow is expected to fall in Greater Manchester this week.
As temperatures dip below freezing, a number of National Severe Warnings for snow and ice have been issued, with further warnings likely to be issued throughout the week. On Tuesday (March 7), the Met Office said a cold and increasingly unsettled weather pattern is now becoming established across the UK with cold air from the north having pushed south across the whole of the country, bringing snow, ice and low temperatures for many.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said: “Snow, ice and low temperatures are the main themes of this week’s forecast, with the UK under an arctic maritime air mass. Snow could lead to some travel disruption, with a chance some rural communities in the north could be cut off.

“The focus for the snow moves to southern England and South Wales tomorrow and some may wake up to a few centimetres of snow, with the south coast and far southwest likely to see a mix of rain and sleet. Further snow and hail showers are also expected along northern coasts, especially in northern Scotland.
“During the afternoon, a further spell of sleet and snow is likely to develop across southern England and South Wales which could cause travel disruption into the evening. The impact of lying snow and ice on untreated surfaces may have an impact on Thursday morning travel.”
The yellow warning will be in effect across Greater Manchester from 3am on Thursday, March 9 to 6pm on Friday, March 10, with the majority of Northern England seeing snow on Thursday morning and evening. The latest maps from the Met Office show just how much snow is expected to fall in the region.
On Thursday, up to 15cm of snow is expected to fall in Greater Manchester, with up to 40cm on higher grounds locally. The Met Office said of the conditions in the UK: "Significant disruption is likely in places and strengthening winds may lead to blizzard conditions and drifting of lying snow".
Snow is expected to begin falling in our region at around 9am on Thursday morning. Temperatures will reach as low as 1C, however, the 'feels like' temperatures will be far colder at -3C.
By Friday morning, temperatures will have increased slightly, peaking at 5C with a 'feels like' temperature reaching as low as 0C. Currently it is not expected snow will fall across Manchester, however, with a chance of some snow in the afternoon for Rochdale and Oldham.
