The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for snow in parts of the region tomorrow.
The warning is expected to be in place from 3pm tomorrow until 12pm on Friday, covering parts of County Durham and Cumbria and extending down to Sheffield. Stanhope and Barnard Castle are among the areas included in the amber warning.
The Met Office said heavy snow is likely to cause significant disruption on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. People are being advised to expect travel delays on roads, with possible stranding of some vehicles and passengers.

Forecasters warn that some delays and cancellations to rail and air travel are likely and there is a "good chance" that some rural communities could become cut off. The amber warning also states that power cuts are likely and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected.
Elsewhere in the North East, a yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in place from 5pm this evening until 7am on Thursday. People are warned to expect longer journey times by road, bus and train services, some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths and some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.
Snow has already fallen in the North East this week, with many people waking to a dusting of snow on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. However, the UK has been warned that more is expected in the coming days.
