Met Office hour-by-hour Newcastle forecast for Saturday and Sunday as snow and rain expected

The snow that kicked off the week across the North East will seemingly continue to plague the weekend, according to weather experts at the Met Office.

The yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been extended until Sunday, March 12, with snowfall expected to continue across the weekend.

Saturday's forecast looks to be briefly sunny in the morning, before thick clouds roll in and turn the skies above Newcastle and its surrounding areas grey. Light rain is expected late in the evening, while snowfall will come between 9.00pm and midnight.

Highs of 5C and lows of 1C are anticipated.

And as Sunday rolls in, the overcast skies will remain in the morning - before bleeding out slightly into cold clouds for the rest of the day. Slightly higher temperatures between 10C and 7C are expected though, putting a brief end to the cold snaps.

The Met Office said: "Very cold but sunny start, then staying dry while high cloud arrives and any patchy freezing fog clears. Rain moving through overnight, preceded by a period of snow this evening.

"Maximum temperature 5 °C."
