Met Office confirms where snow may fall this weekend

  • A cold spell is forecast this weekend, with brisk winds and lively showers bringing a “brief hint of winter” following a record-breaking summer.
  • Saturday will start on a chilly note with temperatures dropping to 8C in Scotland and 10C in England and Wales, with snow possible on higher Scottish ground.
  • Sunday provides the best chance for outdoor activities with drier weather and sunny spells before wet and windy conditions arrive from the west later in the day.
  • Longer-term forecasts predict a wet and stormy autumn that could develop into an icy winter due to the effects of an unprecedented El Niño event.
  • The Met Office warned it is too early to confirm if a weakened polar vortex will bring freezing Arctic air to the UK later this year.
