Met Eireann has issued a thunderstorm warning for six counties this afternoon.
The weather alert, a Status Yellow warning, is for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork and Waterford.
It states that thunderstorms will bring "heavy rain and isolated hail" to these regions.
The warning is valid from 2.26pm on Christmas Eve to 7pm on Christmas Eve.
Met Eireann also said there had been power outages in Cork due to the thunderstorms this afternoon.
Meanwhile, there is also a small craft warning for the entire coast of Ireland.
It states that south to southwest winds will reach force six or higher on all Irish coasts this evening.
It's valid until 3am on Christmas Day.
Earlier, the weather forecast for today from Met Eireann had noted that thunderstorms were possible.
There should be clear spells and scattered showers overnight otherwise, some heavy and prolonged, with a continued chance of isolated thunderstorms and hail and merging to longer spells of rain at times in the northwest towards dawn.
Lowest temperatures of 3C to 8C, coldest in Ulster, in moderate to fresh southerly winds.
There are set to be showers or longer spells of rain tomorrow, Christmas Day.
The wind will veer northwesterly later on Sunday, introducing much colder conditions with the risk of icy surfaces.
Showers in the northwest will turn to sleet and snow over high ground on Christmas Day evening.
