Met Eireann has forecast a subzero freeze to return on Tuesday night as the high-pressure system dominating the weather right now is replaced by a low pressure burst.
Taking to Twitter, the Irish forecaster said the exact same high-pressure system was dominating on this exact day in 1964.
A spokesperson wrote: “While high pressure is playing a role in our current settled weather, it also played a significant role on this day's weather back in 1964”.
Meanwhile, the forecast for later this evening shows conditions starting to get rather cold across the midlands, south and east with a touch of frost possible under clearer breaks.
It’ll be cloudier elsewhere with occasional rain and drizzle, turning persistent in the west and northwest overnight with lows of 1 to 6 degrees expected in light to moderate southwest breezes.
Tuesday will feature a mix of cloud and some sunshine with patchy rain and drizzle extending slowly southeastwards over the country.
Some areas will stay fully dry, though misty conditions may set in. But it will be clearer, and brighter in the northwest later.
The subzero temperature will arrive on Tuesday night for some. However, overall it will be dry but misty with patches of drizzle.
Where clear skies persist some frost will set in with lowest temperatures of -1 to 4 degrees with just light southerly breezes.
On Wednesday it will be largely dry for daylight hours, apart from patchy drizzle across the west and northwest.
The best of any sunny spells will occur towards the south and east and highest temperatures of 8 to 10 degrees are expected.
South to southwest winds will freshen, becoming strong on the western fringes. A band of rain will move down from the northwest soon after dark and some frost and ice will form later under clearing skies.
Lowest temperatures of -2 to +3 degrees are due, and it will be coldest in the south, in moderating westerly breezes.
Thursday will feature a cold and frosty or icy start but with good sunshine too. Most areas will stay dry with just light westerly breezes, though a few passing showers will occur across northern counties.
It’ll be cool but pleasant with highest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees. Some frost early in the night, ahead of increasing cloud and patchy drizzle, mainly across the west. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees are expected, in moderate southwest winds.
Friday will be rather dull and breezy with low clouds and some outbreaks of light rain or drizzle.
Some sunny spells are likely too though across the midlands and east and highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees in moderate to fresh southwest winds.
As for the weekend, the forecaster says: “Mostly frost free. Most areas staying dry in a light southerly airflow with just occasional drizzle”.
